Historic Monument –
and since 1993 the Home of the Hotel Theophano

In 1668 a wealthy merchant ordered the construction of an imposing trading house on the market – to be erected in the baroque "Quedlinburg-Style". Later this building became a guild-house, later still – around 1900 – a restaurant- and coffeehouse.

An ancestor of the present proprietors bought the building in 1924. But in 1952 the East German regime "deprivatized" the property. Finally in 1991 and after Germany’s reunification the buildings were returned to the family.

The opening of our first-class hotel – after extensive restoration of the historic building-complex – is the only way to earn the money we had to spend on the reconstruction of the long-neglected buildings. Most important, this seems the best way to make our monument accessible to interested visitors.

Paula Butturini of the New York Times described the Theophano thus: "Beautifully restored half-timbered construction and charming rooms filled with simple farmhouse antiques on the main market-square. Weinkeller Theophano Restaurant – a stunning restored wine cellar with vaulted ceilings of brick and stone. Cosy and softly lighted, it features well-prepared and lighter fare than the usual German pork and kraut ...".
